Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law

The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA) is the statute within Canada that governs the law on bankruptcy and insolvency. BIA is in control of bankruptcies, as well as consumer and commercial proposals and receiverships throughout the country.

The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy is also regulated by the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law. This federal agency is in charge of ensuring that bankruptcies are administered in a fair and systematic fashion.
