Sports Law

Generally speaking, sports law can be loosely categorized into three areas: amateur sports, professional sports and international sports. The particular difficulty with sports law is that it can be hard to ascertain whether an athlete is classified as amateur or professional; for example an amateur college athlete may be on a scholarship or receive some other form of compensation. They may also be considered amateur by one team or organization but work in a professional capacity for another.

The main area of sports law concerns the contract made between a professional athlete and the owner of their respective team. Other legal issues may arise from liability and intellectual property rights to negligence and risk management.
